It is curious that white, as the sum of all colors, to an artist often signals the absence of all content. White is an opportunity, a challenge, even sometimes a tyrant. Who hasn't gazed at a blank canvas or page filled with aspiration, and who hasn't come to one filled with dread?

White has many -often contradictory- significances in all cultures of the world. Many brides wear white to suggest purity; though if a politician attempts to whitewash something, he or she is attempting to obfuscate. A white flag in battle is a plea for quarter or peace, but in parts of Asia and Africa white is the color of death. In a western movie the good guys wear white hats and always prevail, yet on a chess board both black and white sides are morally neutral and evenly matched. White is sometimes seen as delicate and frail, but few have more authority then a doctor in a white coat.

Even when white is not emanating from an empty canvas, it is still one of the most difficult colors for an artist to utilize. It can muddy paint, flare a lens, and make a drawing appear incomplete. This spring Projekt30 is seeking artwork that addresses white, either materially or conceptually. All mediums are welcome, and the artwork need not be literally white.

As all Projekt30 exhibitions, White will be publicly juried, meaning all artists receive exposure. At the conclusion of the jurying period, 30 artists will be selected for the final show. During both the jurying period and the final exhibition, invitations will be sent to our extensive mailing list of galleries, collectors, and patrons all around the world.
