For a scopophobe (a person with an extreme fear of being looked at), the 21st century is a true nightmare. We live in a time where the very concept of privacy is quickly vanishing. In most major cities it's nearly impossible to leave your home without being recorded. Cameras have become ubiquitous. They are on buildings, stop lights, roadways, police cars, computers, mp3 players, wireless phones, and even occasionally tripods. And now they are networked. Using off-the-shelf facial recognition and data mining software, Carnegie Mellon University researchers showed that with a simple snapshot, anyone can learn practically everything about you: who your friends are, where you live... they can even predict your Social Security number, and in some cases check if you're cheating on your spouse. We used to feel anonymous in a crowd, but -in the beep of an electronic shutter- those days are over.

For a voyeur, the oyster of the world has spread mouthwateringly wide. Voyeurism is nothing new. To gaze upon without being gazed upon is one of the most primal instincts of all predatory animals. We've always lived in a world of peep-holes, two-way mirrors, and hidden cameras. Our society revels in it: from long-lens paparazzi snaps, to reality television, to Facebook stalking.

Which are you, a voyeur or a scopophobe? This summer, Projekt30 is seeking artwork preoccupied with seeing unseen or simply being unseen. All mediums are welcome, not just photography.

As all Projekt30 exhibitions, The Voyeur and the Scopophobe will be publicly juried, meaning all artists receive exposure. At the conclusion of the jurying period, 30 artists will be selected for the final show. During both the jurying period and the final exhibition, invitations will be sent to our extensive mailing list of galleries, collectors, and patrons all around the world.
