Inside what was once one of the country's largest monuments to mental health is a decaying atmosphere that isn't just moldy walls and rotting floors.

It's also about a decay of the human spirit -- which was always in progress. For all those who were helped, there were those for whom these walls was not a refuge but instead represented a mortal hell.

Photographing it is a mixed blessing -- you hardly know where to start and what to say. Here's some of how I found it.
