Arcadia | The End of Time
Since the dawn of human society, mankind has fantasized about a place, a time, a way-of-life unconfined or untainted by civilization.
The idea has taken many forms, from the Apocalypse (or Rapture) of religion, to the American utopian off-shoot societies of the 19th century,
to the near mythical Greko-Roman region of Arcadia, to the sprawling tritely named suburbs of nearly every State.
The urge to return --even violently or through cataclysm-- to an agrarian life style has profoundly shaped our society, influencing our urban planning,
our political institutions, and countless artworks over the centuries.
This summer Projekt30 will host an exhibition exploring this fundamental human proclivity, scheduled to open July 20, 2006.
We encourage applicants to take as wide an interpretation of the subject matter as possible. We are looking for artworks created in almost any medium,
with artistic convenance ranging from the classical to the conceptual.
The exhibition will be publicly juried, in a fashion similar to our other publicly juried exhibitions.
The final exhibition will consist of artwork from 30 artists. It will run concurrently with the July and August exhibitions, from July 20, 2006 to September 10, 2006.
In addition to our usual electronic mail out, this exhibition will also be promoted via traditional, off-line methods:
mailings will be distributed to galleries and organizations in New York City and San Francisco.
